Delhi gangrape case transferred to fast-track court, hearing to begin on Jan 21

One month after the fatal gang rape of a young woman on a moving bus in New Delhi, the case was on Thursday transferred to Fast Track Sessions Court for trial. The court will start hearing the case from January 21.

The five adults accused of the rape could face the death
penalty if convicted.

Another accused is reportedly juvenile and his age is being determined.

Authorities moved the case into a fast track court after the especially brutal attack drew nationwide protests and worldwide scrutiny of violence against women in India.

Fast-track courts are designed to avoid the delays, incompetence and corruption that plagues much the routine legal system.

The young student died on December 29, 13 days after the attack, due to severe internal injuries suffered when she was violated with a metal rod.
